Mussel Rock Landfill — Tetra Tech (Oakland)
The Tetra Tech Geomatics Group was asked by the Oakland office to provide standard topographic mapping of a long-closed landfill site in Daly City, CA. Having previously mapped the site in 2010 for another firm, the Geomatics Group proposed to take the same approach as was taken in 2010 so that the two epochs of mapping would be directly comparable. The site abuts the Pacific Ocean in a location often plagued by foggy conditions in the summer. After weeks of delay due to persistently overcast conditions at the site Tetra Tech mobilized an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) to collect photography under the cloud cover. The UAS photography was the basis for the generation of preliminary mapping that allowed planning to proceed. When the skies over the site finally cleared, large format mapping photography was flown by fixed wing aircraft and the final mapping of the site was compiled.
In support of the Oakland office Geomatics personnel provided field assistance for locating 33 sites for exploratory drilling using a handheld GPS instrument.
