Tetra Tech has performed over 150 human health and ecological risk
assessments involving hazardous substances at National Priorities List (NPL) and
non-NPL sites for industrial and government clients. These projects have led to
the development of tools for calculating risk and cleanup goals following U.S.
EPA and State of California Department of Toxic Substance Control protocols.
Tetra Tech performs risk assessments using realistic exposure pathways and
parameters that lead to reduced site cleanup costs.
- Developed spreadsheet-based tools for evaluating carcinogenic risks and
noncarcinogenic hazards from organic chemicals and metals via multiple
exposure pathways.
- Used human health and ecological risk assessments to develop cleanup goals
that were cost effective and still protective of the environment.
- Developed an ecological toxicity database of 200 organic compounds and
metals for plants, soil invertebrates, amphibians, birds, and mammals.
- Established new statistical tools for calculating exposure point
concentrations and comparing site conditions with background locations.
- Used American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Risk-Based
Corrective Action (RBCA) approach , Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection (MDEP) petroleum risk approach , and the American
Petroleum Institutes Decision Support System (API DSS) to evaluate
potential risks from petroleum hydrocarbons.
Research & Development
Tetra Tech has developed many models that incorporate risk assessment
modules, including RIVRISK and EMAGIS. For more information on
